Yes, and much more.
MORE THAN WHAT?
Existing cinemas and, to some degree, your television at home and its
associated speakers, present two elements to the viewer: picture and (separate)
sound.
Neither really enhances the other, but merely conveys information. The dialogue
supports
the story. The music sounds . . . amplified . . . detached from the theatre . .
. it is
not convincing, not real. The surround sound in the audience, while enjoyable,
does not
convince the viewer that he or she has been transported from their seat into
the story.
So, LHF

creative "state-of-the-art" is contained within the soundtrack of
modern films.
Unfortunately, the much-touted sound systems in cinemas since 1985 and into the
'90s
represent a minimum standard. At Leader, our analysis of the dynamic nature of
film sound
has been ongoing since 1988.
Dubbing stages or mixing theatres located in major production facilities around
the
world have been capable of providing sound quality for mixing purposes, which
would
astound the lay person. It is within these facilities that sound effects, music
and
dialogue shape the mood of a motion picture. Unfortunately, a considerable
amount of this
work is lost, never to be appreciated by the audience due to under-designed
cinema

WHAT DOES LHF

Anyone contemplating the cost of a traditional analog or digital cinema sound
system, to modern standards, is well on the way to receiving the benefits of LHF

is a premium sound system, the incremental increase when placed in
context with motion picture projection equipment, LHF

estimated to be between 18, to 20 years.
Considering that prior to 1984, the majority of cinemas worldwide only provided
superb
sound in stereo 70mm formats, the majority of cinemas were mono or mediocre
quality
surround. With the development of the LucasFilm Ltd. sound system in 1983,
cinemas were
capable of providing an enhanced level of performance to an eager audience and
the
audience knew the difference. For all cinema owners who took the plunge, this
represented
a considerable investment. In some cases, a full conversion from mono sound
with obsolete
acoustics to modern standards, represented an investment of hundreds of
thousands of
dollars. In sound electronics alone, the jump from mono to full Dolby Surround
Sound

was an 80/85% increase in capital cost, in addition to the acoustics.
Today, theatres in the planning stage should adhere to contemporary acoustic
treatment.
The TL [transmission loss] of the walls between theatres needs to be
re-evaluated due to
the advancements in digital super-low-frequency effects. Multi-channel sound
systems and
their Dolby

, Smart , Kintek or Ultra-Stereo processors are considered
"normal." The costs for such systems form a reference for a minimum
standard.
